I was born and raised in South Africa, in the province of Kwa-Zulu Natal, along the outskirts of the city of Durban. Raised mainly by mom, my siblings and I learnt to appreciate everything that was given to us as we watched my mom work hard to raise four kids. My mom, who is my true inspiration.
Growing up during the last years of apartheid in South Africa was very challenging. My parents challenged us further by sending us to multi-racial schools, this was not easy but it sure made my siblings and I wiser children, as we learnt about other races and faced the challenges of understanding the real world at a young age. This also proved to be the best gift that our parents could have given us, we became fluent in the English language, which is an international business language spoken almost everywhere in the world. My first language however is Zulu as I am Zulu.
During my earlier years I was an ordinary kid who loved people and life. I developed a natural liking for poetry, drama and athletics, hence participated in a lot of that while at school. One of the things that my parents picked up about me, was my high curiosity levels, always asking about this and that, which landed me in trouble ever so often because I would ask questions that were beyond my age! It was this very curiosity that carried me by during my school years.
I graduated from High School In 1997. I had originally planned on going to medical school, and then I decided it was going to be metallurgical engineering, however I soon realized that I was no longer that person, the interest was no longer there. My heart was set in the world of Communications. I then took up Public Relations & Media Studies, and enjoyed it thoroughly. I had really found myself in this field.
It was also this very same year that I learnt a lot of things about myself, I never knew. I discovered leadership skills in me when I was elected as the President of the Student Body. During the same year, 1997, I entered my very first Beauty Pageants, which I surprised my self, by winning both. I was crowned both Miss Durban 97’ and Miss Dark & Lovely 97’. This exposed me to a lot of opportunities, as I juggled my duties as Miss Durban, College and Modeling assignments with the agency I had signed up with. I loved the challenge and gained most of my experience, during this era of my life. Modeling became a part of me. I have been at it for about six years and have done it on a very part time basis, until very recently.
In 1999, I embraced an opportunity to travel to the United States to be in a cultural program operated by Walt Disney World, since traveling had always been a burning desire within me. I loved the challenge of traveling to a different place and exploring. After the program I had made up my mind to stay in the U.S. I took the time to learn and assume responsibility for myself as a young adult. It was a time where I grew as a person and learnt the true meaning of life. While working full time, I began to explore the world of modeling in America. Being based in Orlando, Florida was not too favorable as this was not the best place to be as far as pursuing modeling. I signed up with a few agencies, however, and made the most out of what they had to offer. This also gave me the opportunity to understand the industry and for my creative side to grow. At the end of the year 2000, I traveled back to South Africa where I enjoyed seven months of quality time with family and friends.
I returned to the U.S. in June 2001, rejuvenated and with all goals in mind. I decided to do what I really love, and to give it my all. I am now pursuing my creative skills fully and full time. I have enjoyed working and networking with wonderful industry professionals. In this short time I have been blessed to meet people who continue to guide me towards bigger and better things. I have successfully expanded into the world of creative writing and recently into live performing as a spoken word artist, while I continue to enjoy modeling on the side, expanding into the world of acting is also on the cards. As I continue to grow as an artist and entertainer, life has just begun for me and I look forward to all upcoming projects and opportunities. It has truly been quite a year as I continue to unveil talents within me I never knew existed.
